What an AI value engineer does, and what it can't do

An AI value engineer, in the way people search for it, drafts value work from material a company already has. It can assemble a claim, apply a driver to a buyer, and write a first narrative.
It cannot approve the claim. That decision is a person's. The phrase is a job description, not a role you have to hire and not a product name.
Serre, a durable value model for B2B sales teams, keeps the claims a person has approved and projects a business case from them. No value engineer is required. The case is a projection, not a result.
Key takeaways
- 1Treat the search as a job description. It is not a product name, and it is not a seat you have to fill.
- 2Let the draft happen. Have a person decide what enters the library.
- 3Keep one argument for the buying group. A different story per person is the move the evidence warns against.
- 4Call the figure a projection. Serre does not claim an effect on win rate, deal length, or a finance veto.
59%
Negative impact on buying-group consensus when content was focused on individual-level relevance. The same release says content tailored for the group improved consensus by 20%. That 20% is not a Serre result, and it is not a reason to write a private version of the case for each person.
Gartner sales survey, 632 B2B buyers, August–September 2024, published 7 May 2025
The finding is about the buying group, not about a vendor's close rate. Gartner's 7 May 2025 release is the source. A tool that writes a different case for each seat is doing the thing that hurt consensus in that sample.
An AI value engineer drafts. It doesn't approve.
The spreadsheet was already good at multiplication. That was never the scarce part.
What people hope the phrase means is coverage. Routine cases get a first draft without waiting on the one person who knows the model. Serre can do that drafting. Guided Discovery turns account, persona, and solution context into a hypothesis your rep can test. Research supplies the hypothesis. Your rep, and the buyer, supply the confirmation. Serre does not run the discovery conversation for you.
The handoff
What a draft can do
Assemble a claim from your material
What a person still decides
Whether it enters the library
Weakest joint
Serre proposes structure from material you already have. A person approves what the company is willing to claim. Approval is a judgment, not a skill set and not a hire.
What a draft can do
Apply a shared driver to this account
What a person still decides
Whether the baseline is this buyer's
A driver can travel. The baseline, the adoption assumption, and the size of the benefit still have to fit this opportunity.
What a draft can do
Flag a stale or unsupported item
What a person still decides
Whether to keep, correct, or retire it
Serre flags what is unsupported, stale, or in conflict. The flag is not the decision.
What a draft can do
Write the narrative
What a person still decides
The number, which the narrative does not produce
Arithmetic is deterministic. The same inputs give the same result. Prose describes that result. It does not calculate it.
When this applies
Use the draft on the next ordinary deal, where the mechanism is one your team has already accepted. Bring the hard case, the one where the analogy might not hold, back to a person. Where a value engineer exists, they are the natural steward. Where one does not, an enablement lead, a sales manager, a product marketer, a founder, or an AE can approve the claim.
What an AI value engineer can't do
Three states keep the draft honest. Serre uses the distinction so a later reader can see what was decided and what was only calculated.
Three states of a link
- Proposed
The draft
Serre proposes the structure. It is not yet a company claim.
- Approved
The library
A person let it in. Later cases can start from it.
- Derived
The figure
Same inputs, same result. The figure is a projection, not a result the buyer has realized.
A limit, not a footnote
Serre does not claim an effect on win rate, deal length, or a finance veto. We have no measured customer results of that kind. A better-looking draft is not evidence of any of them.
Illustrative. No numbers.
A legal-software rep has a claim about faster retrieval. The draft can write it cleanly. If discovery shows the delay is payment terms, not finding the file, a person has to say the claim does not apply here. Fluency is not a reason to keep it.
A fluent draft can still be the wrong claim. The draft is allowed to be useful and wrong, and someone who knows the offer has to tell those apart.
A fluent draft can still be the wrong claim.
Value discovery is not a new methodology on top of that. Your team already asks what the buyer is trying to change and what it is worth. The missing piece is somewhere the answers stay, and a rule for what is allowed in.
Where Serre fits that job description
Serre is value engineering for every seller. The guidance sits in the product. Turn every deal into a defensible case for change, from logic a person on your team has approved. The page that says this for the value engineering job is an AI value engineer is not a hire.
If the question is how the loop runs after the first approval, read how AI value selling works when the case has to hold. If you are choosing a tool, read how to choose value selling software. If the draft already exists and you need to know what would make it sendable, read what business case generation for software sales has to include.
